Dr. Harold Mayaba — The Lion Hugger helps individuals and organisations discover purpose, build hope and grow through challenges. Based in Nelson, New Zealand, he delivers keynotes, workshops and student programmes grounded in lived experience and practical insight.
As an applied economist, agri-food consultant, lecturer and researcher, Dr. Harold also helps agribusinesses understand consumers, assess market opportunities and make informed decisions. Through H|M Agri-Food Consulting & Speaking, he brings together purpose, resilience and evidence to support personal and business growth.
When purpose leads, fear bows—you can even hug a lion.
"Well, as Giraffes say, you don't get no leaves unless you stick your neck out."
Sid Waddell
Born and raised in the Southern Province of Zambia, Harold experienced a childhood marked by hardship and instability—what he often refers to as “natural military training.” Growing up without a fixed abode, sometimes homeless, and frequently struggling to find food, Harold faced challenges that could have easily ended his dreams.
Yet, in the midst of these overwhelming obstacles, it was resilience and an unshakable “never give up” spirit that propelled him forward. Against all odds, he completed high school and continued his academic journey all the way to earning a PhD—proving that purpose, perseverance, and passion can overcome even the most difficult beginnings.
