Imagine…
Imagine driving in a big city where traffic jams are the daily norm. It is your first driving experience in that city, and you have limited time to reach your destination. You are not concerned about getting lost because you are using a GPS. Turn right, and then turn left. But as you are driving, you encounter some challenges.
As you listen attentively to the calm voice from the GPS, you realise that when the GPS says, after 100 meters, ‘turn right,’ you get to that point; there is no road turning right. The same happens time and again. You get vexed at the GPS, and your reaction makes your driving treacherous.
While trying to figure out what to do, you hear a soft voice say, ‘In the next 100 meters, your destination will be on your left.’ Your face lit up with excitement; that was easy getting here. In no time, the voice comes up again: You have arrived. To your surprise, when the GPS says you have reached your destination, you realise it is the wrong address.
Now, you are enraged to the point of smashing the GPS. You ask yourself. How did I get here? Then you lean back in your seat, reflecting on what happened. As the anger melts away like a glacier on a hot day, you bring yourself before the questioning audience, and you are the audience yourself and the one giving answers. Who bought the GPS? Answer: myself. Who set up the location on a GPS? Answer: myself. Who was driving? Answer: myself. Then you smile and calmly whisper to yourself, it will be well.
That was my experience seven years ago when I drove in Auckland for the first time, using an outdated TomTom GPS navigation system. Getting lost in a new town is bad enough, but being in a traffic jam in the concrete jungle of Auckland is a confronting situation, with vehicles on both sides, behind you, and in front of you on a four-lane motorway. As annoying as the situation may be, smashing the GPS does not change anything. The ONLY THING THAT CAN CHANGE THE SITUATION IS TO CHANGE THE SITUATION.
Is your GPS (vision) getting you to the destination you want?
Many businesses and individuals are right now stuck in a traffic jam of competition. They devised a road map to achieve their goal—a road map to reach their destination. But to their surprise, they have arrived at a different location and ask themselves, how did we get here?
Your thoughts, choices, and decisions got you where you are. Your own TomTom GPS and the address location you set up got you there. It is common for business firms to use outdated GPS systems—the road map (vision)—to get them to a destination, and for sure, one day, they will arrive, but at the wrong address. They get unwanted results.
Sometimes, businesses or individuals do not even have GPS (vision). As the saying goes, “If you don’t know where you’re going, any road will get you there.” Lewis Carroll.
Here are some questions:
Are you using the right GPS to keep you on your intended course?
Is the GPS set up for the intended address?
Remember, SOONER OR LATER YOU WILL ARRIVE!
